Nous nous sommes penchée sur la réédition du livre d’Ernest Girault Une colonie d’enfer, parce que nous pensons que cet auteur représente d’une certaine manière la continuité du parcours d’Isabelle Eberhart. Cette « Colonie d’enfer » désigne l’Algérie de 1904, celle que le Gouverneur Jonnart appelait « La perle des colonies ». This article is an attempt to do justice to a woman torn between the thesis of spying and exaggerated idealization: Isabelle Eberhardt, alias Si Mahmoud. Many have rejected her, few who understood and accepted her. We looked at the reissue of Ernest Girault’s book “A colony from hell” (Une colonie d’enfer), because we believe that this author represents in a certain way the continuity of Isabelle Eberhardt journey. This “Colony of hell” refers to Algeria in 1904, the one governor Jonnart called “The pearl of the colonies”. Girault will show that this Algeria wounded and mutilated by the so-called policy of “peaceful colonization”.
