This article examines how historical material is transformed into fictional narrative in Tunisian novelist Hassnine Ben Ammou’s ʿĀm al-Fazūʿ 1864. It asks how identifiable events and actors from the Tunisian uprising of 1864 become fictional material, and what function this transformation performs within the novel. The study adopts a monographic narratological approach based on close reading of the paratext, plot structure, narrative modes, dialogue, and representations of consciousness. It also makes a focused comparison with the historiographical source explicitly invoked by the novel, particularly Ahmad Ibn Abi al-Diyaf’s Ithāf ahl al-zamān. The analysis identifies interconnected mechanisms : temporal framing through “1864” ; two initially parallel and subsequently intertwined plotlines ; the attribution of fictional actions to historical figures ; the insertion of invented characters into referential events ; dialogic dramatization ; fictional access to interiority ; and the expansion of briefly recorded events into developed scenes. The article argues that history primarily performs a representational and revivifying function, while occasional echoes of the present remain insufficient to support a systematic allegorical reading. Historical fiction thus preserves a claim to the past while rehumanizing it through narrative invention. </description>
