A Critical Evaluation of Literary Competence Representation in the Algerian EFL Textbook At the Crossroads

Teaching literature in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms is increasingly recognized as a means of developing linguistic proficiency, interpretive depth, critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and creativity. Yet, in Algerian secondary education, literary learning remains unevenly represented and institutionally restricted. This article evaluates the representation of literary competence in At the Crossroads, the official first-year secondary English textbook in Algeria, with a specific focus on Unit 2, Once Upon a Time, the only unit explicitly devoted to literature and officially assigned to the literary stream. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative document analysis design supported by a hybrid evaluation checklist and quantitative scoring. The checklist combines general textbook-evaluation criteria with literature-specific, intercultural, and competency-based frameworks, and the analysis is triangulated through the Student Book, the Teacher’s Guide, and classroom-based professional observation. The findings show that literary competence is only partially supported. The textbook includes authentic excerpts, clear pedagogical sequencing, and some project-oriented tasks; however, it privileges narrative prose, marginalizes poetry and drama, excludes Algerian and Maghrebi literary voices, and gives limited attention to stylistic interpretation, creative response, intercultural comparison, and performance-based assessment. The study argues that literary competence should not be treated as a stream-specific supplement but as a transversal component of EFL education. It recommends diversifying genres, integrating local and world literatures, designing higher-order interpretive and creative tasks, clarifying assessment rubrics, and ensuring equitable literary exposure across academic streams.

Cognitive Demands of Algerian Middle School Exit Examinations: A Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy Analysis of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (2015–2025)

Abstract This study examines the extent to which Algerian middle school exit examinations assess higher-order thinking skills in History, Geography, Islamic Education, and Civic Education. Drawing on Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy as an analytical grid, it classifies the cognitive levels of examination questions administered between 2015 and 2025. The consolidated corpus comprises 279 coded question items distributed across the four subjects. The results show that the examinations remain largely anchored in lower-order cognitive processes: remembering and understanding account for 62.0% of all coded items, while applying represents 25.1%. By contrast, higher-order thinking skills are only marginally represented: analysing accounts for 0.4%, evaluating for 12.5%, and creating is entirely absent. Islamic Education displays the strongest orientation toward remembering, whereas Geography and Civic Education show comparatively greater emphasis on understanding and application. The article reveals a discrepancy between Algeria’s competency-based curricular ambitions and the cognitive architecture of national assessment. It argues for stronger curriculum-assessment alignment through item-writing training, validated question banks, transparent cognitive-level specifications, and systematic post-examination analysis.
