Commodifying Digital Privacy and Reproducing Gendered Visibility on Social Media: An Exploratory Study of Algerian Youth in Relizane

This article examines how Algerian youth interpret women’s online visibility, digital privacy, and the growing commercial logic of social media platforms. Rather than treating women’s online practices as transparent reflections of social reality, the study analyzes the normative and symbolic frameworks through which these practices are perceived, judged, and discussed. The article draws on an exploratory descriptive survey administered online to 80 young respondents in the wilaya of Relizane, Algeria. The questionnaire combined socio-demographic questions with closed-ended items on visibility, privacy, values, self-presentation, and the perceived commercial dimension of women’s digital content. The findings show that respondents largely view social media as a powerful actor in reshaping the public image of women, but their interpretations remain deeply structured by moral regulation, gendered expectations, and local cultural norms. Digital privacy is primarily understood as a socially negotiated boundary rather than a purely individual right. Respondents also associate women’s digital presence with influencer practices, aesthetic self-presentation, and the circulation of everyday life as visible content. At the same time, the results reveal important tensions between self-expression, symbolic agency, and platformized forms of exposure. Because the study is exploratory and based on a convenience sample, it does not claim statistical generalization; its contribution lies in clarifying how youth perceptions participate in the social reproduction of gendered visibility in contemporary Algerian digital culture.

This article examines the sociolinguistic representations associated with women’s speech in Algeria, focusing on stereotypes that relate it to talkativeness, linguistic politeness, lexical choice and expressive forms. Based on a questionnaire administered to approximately one hundred participants from educated social backgrounds — physicians, teachers of French and students —, the study investigates the persistence, circulation and transformation of these representations in an Algerian context shaped by social, cultural and linguistic change. The analysis combines a variationist perspective, a theory of social representations, a gender-oriented approach to language practices and an examination of the discursive procedures through which stereotyping operates. The findings show that most respondents acknowledge a perceived difference between speech practices attributed to men and those attributed to women, while also questioning some stereotypes traditionally attached to femininity, especially talkativeness and politeness. The article argues that gender does not mechanically produce fixed linguistic forms; rather, it frames social evaluations, normative expectations and ways of categorising speakers.

This article examines symbolic violence against women in Algerian popular culture through the study of proverbs considered as concise, memorable and socially authoritative discourse. It argues that proverbs do not merely reflect representations of women ; they also help produce, normalize and transmit them through generalization, analogy, devaluation and the naturalization of gender roles. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical approach based on a corpus of Algerian popular proverbs, focusing on their presuppositions, metaphors, axiological oppositions and social effects. The analysis shows that women are represented ambivalently : they are praised when associated with motherhood, fertility, domestic order and honour, yet depreciated when portrayed as cunning, irrational, dangerous, talkative, unfaithful, divisive or destructive. The article concludes that such sayings contribute to the reproduction of masculine domination, especially because their symbolic authority often makes them appear as common sense rather than as historically situated discourse. Critically reading these proverbs therefore does not imply rejecting popular culture as a whole ; it means distinguishing cultural memory from representations that legitimize gender inequality and violence.
