This article examines the recomposition of honor in a selection of Si Mohand Ou Mhand’s Isefra transmitted through Mouloud Mammeri’s edition. It explores how the poetic voice represents disrupted solidarity, downward mobility, reputation, loyalty, and reversals of rank in the context of colonial rupture. The method is based on a qualitative close reading of the selected poems, with particular attention to terms translated as honor or dignity, kinship and friendship relations, religious figures, and animal metaphors. The findings reveal an ambivalent recomposition: honor partly shifts from inherited status toward an ethical demand for self-command, truthful speech, and fidelity, while inherited hierarchical representations remain active. Images of social inversion therefore convey unease about the redistribution of prestige rather than an unequivocal celebration of subordinate groups. The study ultimately shows that criticism of social decline cannot be equated with an equalization of status. Its contribution lies in identifying the tension among the moral interiorization of honor, the memory of a disrupted social order, and the persistence of hierarchical categories.

This article offers a comparative reading of Yasmina Khadra’s Les Vertueux and Mouloud Feraoun’s Le fils du pauvre in order to examine the relations between collective honor, individual dignity, and identity formation in Algerian literature written in French. The study adopts a socio-critical and comparative approach focused on structures of domination, processes of subjectivation, and the narrative mediations through which characters define, lose, and reconstruct themselves. It argues, first, that honor operates in both novels as an ambivalent social code: while it may sustain symbolic cohesion, it also becomes a mechanism of control when it legitimizes surveillance, hierarchy, and the sacrifice of vulnerable subjects. It shows, second, that dignity is never inherited in either text, but emerges as a laborious reconquest of the self: for Yacine Chéraga through dispossession, war, and forgiveness; for Fouroulou Menrad through education, effort, and reflective autonomy. The article finally demonstrates that both novels displace the meaning of Algerian identity, presenting it not as a fixed legacy but as a dynamic elaboration negotiated between collective memory, social trial, and the affirmation of the subject.
