Figures of Speech in Kabyle Riddles: Rhetorical Operations, Semantic Domains, and Oral Poetics

This article examines the figurative mechanisms through which Kabyle riddles make an everyday referent temporarily opaque while keeping it recoverable for a culturally competent hearer. It draws on riddles collected by the author in Ait Kouffi (Tizi Ouzou) between 2010 and 2018 as part of a larger doctoral corpus, supplemented by published Kabyle and Amazigh collections. The analysis combines riddle scholarship, performance-oriented folklore studies, and cognitive-stylistic approaches to figurative meaning. Rather than assigning each item to a single trope, it distinguishes metaphor and simile, metonymic and part-whole cues, personification, paradoxical predication, and circumlocution, while allowing these operations to overlap. The examples show that analogical mapping repeatedly structures descriptions of the natural world, material culture, the human body, and social relations. At the same time, several riddles derive their opacity not from one isolated figure but from layered relations among resemblance, contiguity, grammatical categorization, sound, and culturally shared knowledge. The study therefore treats riddles as forms of verbal art whose interpretation depends on both linguistic structure and situated cultural competence. It argues for a restrained cultural reading: the corpus documents locally meaningful ways of describing and classifying experience, but it does not by itself warrant claims about a single or timeless Amazigh worldview.

This study explores how Abdellah Mohia adapted universal theatrical works, particularly those by Brecht, Pirandello, and Erdman, to anchor them within contemporary Amazigh culture. The primary objective is to analyze how, through transwriting, Mohia integrates Kabyle linguistic, cultural, and identity-specific elements into narratives of universal significance. The central research question examines the mechanisms of cultural appropriation at play in these adaptations and their role in preserving and revitalizing Amazigh identity. Drawing upon literary adaptation theory (Hutcheon, 2006), cultural studies (Hall, 1997), and dramaturgical analysis, the study conducts an in-depth comparative examination between the source texts and their Kabyle reinterpretations, particularly Menţţif akka wala seddaw uẓekka, adapted from Erdman’s The Suicide. The results highlight a creative hybridity where the universal is merged with the local, thereby reinforcing the political and identity-driven dimension of modern Amazigh theatre. The conclusion emphasizes that Mohia’s work represents a dynamic form of cultural resistance and paves the way for future comparative research on committed postcolonial theatres.

This text delves into the pivotal role of proper names in Kabyle oral literature, particularly in genres like folktales, proverbs, riddles, and their contribution to the preservation of Kabyle culture, language, and local knowledge. It underscores that oral literature, in the absence of written archives, serves as collective memory, and proper names play a fundamental role in evoking historical figures, mythical places, legendary heroes, deities, and significant events in Kabyle history. These names carry symbolic meanings and reflect specific cultural and religious beliefs and practices, providing access to the collective imagination, cultural codes, and mythological references. This article posits several hypotheses, including the recurrence and significance of certain proper names in Kabyle oral literature due to their cultural and symbolic relevance. Furthermore, it assumes that these proper names contribute to the transmission of values and beliefs within the Kabyle community. It also explores the idea that the meaning of these names evolves over time in response to social and cultural changes.
