From Carthage to Rome: Learning, Knowledge Transmission, and Inequality in Ancient North Africa

This article proposes a diachronic reinterpretation of learning in ancient North Africa from the Carthaginian sphere to the Roman period. Rather than presenting Roman rule as the sudden beginning of education in the region, it analyses how earlier technical, religious, scribal, commercial, philosophical, and courtly forms of knowledge were progressively converted, filtered, or displaced within Roman civic and urban structures. The study is conceived as a critical historical synthesis grounded in a controlled corpus of ancient literary testimony, epigraphic evidence, material traces of schooling, bilingual pedagogical texts, and recent scholarship on Roman Africa, ancient education, and historical sociolinguistics. Its methodological contribution lies in separating three evidential regimes: direct evidence of schooling, institutional proxies for literate competence, and contextual evidence of knowledge transmission. The argument shows that pre-Roman North Africa possessed multiple learning environments without forming a unified school system. Carthage reveals scribal, ritual, agricultural, commercial, and translated intellectual cultures; Numidian and Mauretanian courts reveal selective elite scholarship; and Roman cities expanded the social visibility of literacy, grammar, and rhetoric. Yet this expansion remained unequal. Education functioned simultaneously as a means of civic participation, linguistic formation, professional mobility, discipline, and elite reproduction. By replacing a narrative of educational origin with one of continuity, reconfiguration, multilingual hierarchy, and selective access, the article offers a more precise model for understanding the social history of knowledge in ancient North Africa.

This article examines Algerian linguistic heritage as a composite space where historical memory, communicative practice, and identity politics intersect. It asks how this plural heritage — including Modern Standard Arabic, Tamazight, Algerian Darija, and other languages sedimented through history — contributes to the shaping of collective consciousness and to strengthening national belonging. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical sociolinguistic-cultural approach. Language is treated not merely as a medium of communication, but as a carrier of memory, a resource for social cohesion, and a symbolic site where the nation negotiates its self-understanding. The analysis shows that Algerian linguistic heritage cannot be reduced to a single legitimate code ; rather, it emerges from the historical interaction of several linguistic layers. This heritage plays a central role in transmitting memory, sustaining solidarity, and resisting erasure, while also facing institutional, educational, and digital pressures. The article concludes that safeguarding linguistic heritage requires coordinated action through schooling, media, academic documentation, and public policies that recognize diversity as a condition of national unity rather than a threat to it.

In this contribution, we delve into the city as a product of languages, approaching its multicultural and therefore plurilingual dimension through its dialects. The city emerges as a space structured by social and cultural practices, symbolizing language identities that are often fluid. It serves as a living environment where linguistic uses proliferate, especially in spontaneous exchanges in urban settings such as the university. We describe and analyze lexical creation in the speech of young students at the University of Mostaganem. This analysis of neologisms, produced by the students, reveals that lexical creation appears in students’ speech as a sign of belonging to a particular social group. In other words, speakers denounce a mode of expression imbued with Algerian and French terms.
